Mkheeri is one of Europe's highest mountain churches — the Archangel Gabriel Church at 2,500m, reached by a rough 22km 4x4 track about 1.5 hours from Mestia. At the top, a full 360° panorama takes in Ushba, Elbrus, Tetnuldi, Gistola and Laila on a clear day.

We run it as a sunrise (05:00 departure) or sunset (18:00) trip, timed for the best light on the surrounding peaks — about 5 hours round trip, weather permitting.

Road and weather note
22 km each way on a rough mountain 4x4 track, about 1.5 hours — an experienced local driver is essential and this isn't a route for a regular rental car. The trip only runs in good weather — the road is difficult enough that we won't take the risk in rain or poor visibility. We confirm conditions before each departure.

What to bring

  • Warm sweater or windbreaker (cool at altitude even in summer)
  • Sturdy closed-toe shoes
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Water and a snack if picnicking
  • A charged phone or camera

FAQ

Sunrise or sunset — which is better?+

Both give the same panorama in different light. Sunrise means an early 05:00 start; sunset leaves at 18:00 and gets you back after dark.

Can this run in bad weather?+

No — the road is difficult enough that we only run this trip in good, clear conditions, and will reschedule rather than take you up for nothing.
