Svaneti's Slopes Turn Red: Barberry in Autumn Splendor
Each autumn, Svaneti's mountain slopes become covered with bright red barberry berries (kotsakhuri in Georgian), a staple of Georgian cuisine used as a spice and souring agent. The striking red bushes create a picturesque landscape against the backdrop of autumn grasses and rocky terrain.

Right now, Svaneti's mountain slopes are dotted with low-growing shrubs laden with brilliant red berries. From a distance, you can spot crimson patches scattered across the autumn grassland, while up close, the berries strung along the branches look like beaded garlands.
This is barberry. In Georgian โ แแแฌแแฎแฃแ แ (kotsakhuri).
The same barberry many people know as a spice or from childhood candies. Here in Svaneti, it grows wild on its own: across dry, sun-exposed slopes, nestled among stones and scrubland.
The berries are small, oblong, and intensely tart. In Georgian cuisine, barberry is made into a sauce with herbs and spices, while dried berries are added to dishes for their distinctive sourness. You can also steep them in tea or add them to fruit compote.
Autumn brings out Svaneti's full palette of colors. But right now, it's the red barberry bushes that steal the show, turning the slopes into something truly festive โ as if the mountains have draped themselves in garlands one last time before winter.
