Things to Do in Svaneti

The experiences worth your days in Svaneti, sorted by effort — from easy glacier walks to the full Mestia–Ushguli trip.

By ProSvaneti team · Updated 2026-07-05

Short answer: the essentials are the Ushguli day trip, a hike or 4x4 ride to the Koruldi Lakes for Ushba views, the easy Chalaadi Glacier walk, and a Tetnuldi sunset run. Base yourself in Mestia and pick by how much effort you want.

Here's how we'd sort them.

Easy (little walking)

  • Chalaadi Glacier — a gentle forest walk to a real glacier snout. The best first day in Svaneti.
  • Tetnuldi sunset — an evening 4x4 up to the ski slopes for golden light over the Caucasus.
  • Cross of Mestia viewpoint — a short drive above town for a wide valley panorama.

Moderate (a proper day out)

  • Ushguli day trip — the signature Svaneti experience: UNESCO tower villages under Mount Shkhara, reached by a rough but spectacular 4x4 road.
  • Koruldi Lakes — alpine lakes on the ridge above Mestia with a front-row view of Mount Ushba.
  • Mazeri & Shdugra waterfall — a quieter valley walk under Ushba's north face.

For hikers

Svaneti is trekking country. The multi-day Mestia–Ushguli trek is the classic, passing through Adishi and high passes. If you want a guided version matched to your fitness, just ask.

In winter

From roughly December to March, Hatsvali and Tetnuldi offer snow-dependent skiing with a fraction of the crowds of European resorts. Bring proper cold-weather gear and check conditions first.

Don't over-plan

The single most common mistake is cramming too much into too few days and underestimating mountain timing. Three to four unhurried days beats a rushed week's worth of driving.

What can you do in Svaneti in bad weather?+

Museums in Mestia (the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography), the towers in town, and lower forest walks like Chalaadi still work when the high peaks are in cloud.
