There's no train or direct flight to Mestia from most cities — the last leg is always by road.

From Kutaisi
Kutaisi has the closest international airport and lots of budget flights, which makes it the most common gateway. It's about 4.5 hours to Mestia, with a scenic serpentine section near the end. A Kutaisi to Mestia transfer can be timed to your flight, including late arrivals.
From Zugdidi (and the overnight train)

From Tbilisi
Direct from the capital it's a full day — 7–8 hours — but a Tbilisi to Mestia transfer lets you stop along the way (the Enguri dam viewpoint is worth it). There's also a small plane that's quick but frequently cancelled for weather; many people fly one way and drive the other.
From Batumi

Private vs shared
