First solo ascent of Ushba in 30 years

Ushba is the mountain by which Svaneti measures character. The twin-horned peak, just over 4,700 meters high, has long been considered one of the most difficult and dangerous in the Caucasus range — so much so that it's earned the nickname "the Caucasus Matterhorn." Steep rock walls, icy slopes, and unpredictable weather mean only those truly prepared for serious mountaineering attempt it. A solo ascent here is rare even for experienced alpinists.

Georgian alpinist Levan Mosashvili recently accomplished just that. He climbed Ushba alone — no partner, no support team, relying only on himself, his preparation, and his experience. According to reports, this is the first solo ascent of this peak by a Georgian alpinist in the last 30 years — a timeframe that speaks volumes about how rarely anyone takes on such a challenge.

Levan shared that the climb had its moments of doubt. "At one point, I thought about turning back — the route seemed longer than I remembered," he said. "But I decided to keep going."

Behind those words lies something well known to anyone who climbs mountains: a solo ascent isn't just about physical fitness — it's about constant inner dialogue with yourself. When there's no partner to offer support or backup, every decision to push forward or turn around must be made alone, and the cost of a mistake becomes far higher. Clearly, Levan weighed all the risks and ultimately chose to see it through — and his decision paid off.
