🏔 KORULDI LAKES — PANORAMIC ROUTE ABOVE MESTIA

Koruldi Lakes sit on a ridge above Mestia at roughly 2,750 meters elevation.

Let's be clear about what this place actually is.

Koruldi isn't a destination for turquoise alpine lakes where you swim or spend the whole day by the water. It's a handful of modest high-altitude pools whose size and water level shift with the season and rainfall.

What matters here isn't the lakes themselves—it's the journey, the altitude, and the panoramas along the way.

As you climb, views open up toward Ushba, Tetnuldi, Laila, Banguriani, Mestia, and the surrounding mountain ridges.

Important note: once you reach the lakes themselves, Ushba is no longer visible. The best views of it come earlier, on the way up.

🚶 HIKING FROM MESTIA

The hiking trail starts in Mestia and climbs through Lanchvali toward the Cross above town.

To the Cross on foot usually takes around 2–3 hours one way.

If you take the hiking trail rather than the vehicle road, the elevation gain is steep. (roughly 3km, 900m elevation gain)

From the Cross to Koruldi Lakes is another roughly 2–3 hours on foot. (4km, 600m elevation gain)

So the round trip Mestia–Koruldi–Mestia hike takes up most of a full day.

There's another important detail to know. 👇

In good dry weather, the section above the Cross runs alongside the road used by 4x4s. Vehicles kick up a lot of dust, so hiking this stretch can be less pleasant than photos suggest. 👀

A practical option is to mix transport and hiking:

• drive to the Cross by car, then hike to the lakes on foot;

• ride by vehicle to Koruldi, then hike back down;

• drive the entire route both ways in a 4x4.

🚙 THE ROAD TO KORULDI

This is a serious mountain 4x4 road.

Even the stretch to the Cross is steep and rocky.

Above the Cross begins a more demanding section, and the final push to the lakes crosses a very steep clayey slope.

⚡️After rain, this section becomes dangerous. ⚡️

Until the slope dries completely, a vehicle can lose traction both climbing and descending.

When conditions are like this, we don't send vehicles to the lakes.

⚠️ WHAT KIND OF VEHICLE IS NEEDED

A standard passenger car won't work for this route.

You need:

• high ground clearance;

• genuine 4×4 full-time all-wheel drive;

• good tires;

• preferably a low-range transfer case;

• driving experience on steep rocky and dirt mountain roads.

For trips to Koruldi, it's best to use prepared 4x4 vehicles and local drivers who know road conditions and tricky sections.

🌦 WEATHER AND CONDITIONS

There's almost no shade on the ridge.

Even if Mestia is warm and sunny, the ridge can have strong winds and noticeably colder temps.

Bring along:

• water;

• snacks;

• closed comfortable hiking boots;

• sunscreen;

• sunglasses;

• a windbreaker or warm jacket.

Early in the season, snow can still cover the upper sections.

🏔 CAN YOU HIKE FURTHER

Yes.

Koruldi isn't the end point for those wanting a serious mountain trek.

From the lakes you can continue higher along the ridge toward Guli Pass.

For experienced hikers, Koruldi can be part of a longer route crossing toward Mazeri.

But that's no longer a stroll to the lakes—it's a serious mountain crossing.

It requires solid fitness, proper boots, plenty of water and food, a reliable weather forecast, and enough time.
