What I Found Under the Bark in Svaneti's Forest
While waiting for tourists in Mazeri, I decided to take a walk through the damp forest and collect some interesting twisted branches for crafts.
Under the bark of one of the old branches, I found an unexpected surprise — this unusual black spider.
Based on its appearance and where I found it, this is likely one of the ground spiders (family Gnaphosidae). They live secretive lives, so encounters with them are relatively rare.
What do we know about them?
🕸 Hides under bark, stones, and rotting wood.
🌙 Hunts mainly at night.
🪲 Feeds on insects and other small invertebrates, playing an important role in the forest ecosystem.
⚫️ Despite their intimidating appearance, they're practically harmless to humans. If left undisturbed, they'll prefer to hide rather than attack.
