Electricity Meters for Mestia: Installation Plan and Fighting Illegal Mining

Georgia's energy regulator GNERC announced that smart meters will be installed in Mestia by late autumn to identify consumption spikes and illegal cryptocurrency mining. However, no concrete timeline for solving electricity outages or new billing terms for residents has been provided.

⚡️ When will smart meters arrive in Mestia?

According to GNERC head David Narmania, installation of balance meters is on schedule and should wrap up by late autumn. These meters will help pinpoint where power consumption spikes suddenly—including from illegal mining operations.

For Mestia, this is a real issue.

Back on September 16, our chat reported that Lanchwali had no power since morning. Outages matter both to residents and visitors counting on working remotely.

⚠️ The meters will help find overloaded grid sections, but nobody's naming a date when the blackouts will stop.

Narmania's statement also doesn't spell out what residents will actually pay for electricity going forward.

We've already covered outages and mining in Svaneti and the mining equipment seized in June.
