ZUGDIDI–MESTIA ROAD: CONDITIONS BY SECTION

Total distance from Zugdidi to Mestia is roughly 135–140 km.

Driving time without long stops is about 3 hours.

Let's break down the road section by section — the road surface quality varies noticeably along the route.

Zugdidi → Dzvari — about 30 km

Almost completely flat terrain. Good asphalt road with no challenging mountain sections yet.

The climb into the mountains actually begins right after Dzvari.

⛽️ Important: the last gas station before Svaneti is at Dzvari. The next one is only in Mestia, so plan your fuel carefully.

Dzvari → Khaishi — about 40 km

The mountain section of the route begins.

Overall, the road is in good condition. There are some sections being repaired after winter damage, but the road is well maintained and there are no serious driving problems at the moment.

On the climb from Dzvari, you can stop and visit the Ingur Hydroelectric Dam.

Khaishi → Nakra — about 30 km

One of the best road sections on this route.

Large portions have almost brand-new asphalt. Road conditions are good with no significant pavement issues.

Nakra → Mestia — about 40 km

The situation is noticeably worse here.

Cracked old concrete surface, uneven patches, and some dirt sections in places. Road repairs are gradually progressing from the Khaishi side, but most of the Nakra–Mestia stretch hasn't been reached yet.

📍 What else you should know about the route

The road is incredibly scenic and runs alongside the turbulent Inguri River almost the entire way. It constantly climbs and descends, winds through a canyon, and passes through several mountain passes.

You'll find waterfalls, small cafés, and rest stops along the way. Cafés and restrooms can be found around Barzhashi, Khaishi, and Lakhamula.

Overall, the route is passable in a regular passenger car. In normal summer conditions, four-wheel drive is not required for the Zugdidi–Mestia road.
