Best Time to Visit Svaneti

Short answer: June through September is the reliable window for hiking and sightseeing, with July–August the warmest and busiest. Early October brings Svaneti's best photography light (golden autumn). December through mid-April is ski season at Tetnuldi and Hatsvali. Late April/May and November are the true off-seasons — muddy, unpredictable, and not what you're picturing.

Spring (March–May): still winter in the mountains

In March, snow starts melting in Mestia itself, but the surrounding peaks stay cold and snow-covered. Expect roughly -2°C to 10°C in town. April and May bring the valley up to 5–15°C and the trees start blooming — but higher trails can still be snowed in.

Ski lifts typically keep running into March. Hiking season officially opens in early May, but honestly, it's only for well-prepared, experienced hikers — a lot of snow is still sitting on the routes. If you want to hike rather than ski, don't come before late May at the earliest.

Summer (June–August): the main season, for good reason

June days in Mestia can hit 20°C, with nights dropping to around 10°C — though snow is still possible at altitude early in the month. By July and August, valley daytime temperatures run 20–30°C, mountains stay cooler at 10–15°C, and evening rain becomes more common.

This is when snow finally clears from the Koruldi Lakes trail and we start running tours up there — but "comfortable for hiking" really means from around June 20 onward, not June 1. If your trip is fixed for early June, plan lower-altitude activities and treat any high trail as a bonus, weather permitting.

July–August is also the busiest, warmest stretch — book accommodation ahead if you're coming then.

Autumn (September–November): our favorite window, and then the crash

September is genuinely one of the best months here: 15–20°C, especially in the first half, and the mountains start turning color. October cools down fast, especially at night (down toward 0°C), and by early-to-mid October you hit peak golden autumn — the forests around Mestia turn a real kaleidoscope of color. If photography is your priority, this is the window to target.

November is the crash into winter: first snowfalls, temperatures down to -5°C in the mountains, and the region genuinely quiets down as it waits for the ski season. It's the least rewarding month to visit for most travelers.

Winter (December–February): ski season

Tetnuldi and Hatsvali run through this window, with Mestia sitting around -5°C and the mountains dropping to -15°C. Snowfall is heaviest in the first half of January. Winter tires are legally required on mountain roads and passes in this period, and chains in the trunk are a good idea regardless of what your driver tells you.

If you're flying in via the small Mestia airstrip, treat the flight as a lottery — winter weather cancels it often enough that you shouldn't build a tight schedule around it.

Why we won't promise you a forecast

Mountain weather here changes fast enough that a week-ahead forecast is close to useless — we've watched clear forecasts turn into whiteout conditions with a few hours' notice. The only forecast worth trusting is roughly a day out. That's also why our tours (especially anything at altitude, like Koruldi Lakes or the Tetnuldi sunset run) get a final weather check the evening before, not weeks in advance.
