Mestia to Ushguli Trek

The multi-day trek that connects Mestia to Ushguli through Svan villages and a high pass — what's real, what depends on your fitness, and how to plan it honestly.

By ProSvaneti team · Updated 2026-07-08

The Mestia–Ushguli trek is the multi-day hike that connects Svaneti's main town to its highest villages on foot, passing through Svan hamlets most day-trippers never see. It's a real trek — not a long walk — and it deserves an honest description rather than an invented day-by-day itinerary with numbers nobody has verified for your fitness level.

What the route actually is

The trek links Mestia to Ushguli through a chain of villages along the way, crossing mountain terrain rather than following the vehicle road. One of the notable waypoints is Adishi, where the trail climbs a pass between Adishi and the village of Iprali — and where, in summer, you get genuine views of the Adishi Glacier and can sometimes hear the sound of ice breaking off it. This pass section is remote: expect no mobile signal, so plan accordingly.

We're deliberately not publishing a fabricated hour-by-hour, kilometer-by- kilometer breakdown here. Pace varies hugely by group fitness, weather, and how many nights you take, and a confident-looking table with invented numbers would be worse than no table at all. What we can tell you:

  • It's typically done as a multi-day trek (several nights), not a long day hike
  • You pass through working Svan villages, with basic guesthouse accommodation available along most of the route in season
  • The Adishi–Iprali pass section is the most exposed and remote part — budget extra caution and time there
  • Season: June to September. Outside that window, expect snow on the higher sections regardless of what the valleys look like

Planning it safely

  • Navigation: Google Maps does not show most mountain trails here. Download an offline app before you go — Organic Maps and OsmAnd are solid, ad-free options for this kind of terrain.
  • Connectivity: don't count on signal once you're away from the main villages. Tell someone your rough plan before you start.
  • Fitness: this is a genuine multi-day trek with real elevation change, not a casual walk. Be honest with yourself about your conditioning before committing.
  • Weather: mountain weather here turns fast — see our weather and roads guide. A trek this long means more exposure to a weather window changing mid-route.

Trek vs. day tour — don't mix them up

If what you actually want is to see Ushguli rather than trek there, the Ushguli day tour from Mestia gets you there and back by 4x4 in a single day. The trek is a fundamentally different, much longer undertaking through the villages in between — plan for the one you actually want.

FAQ

Is the Mestia to Ushguli trek the same as the Ushguli day tour?+

No. The day tour and transfer drive you to Ushguli by 4x4 in about 2 hours. The trek is a genuinely different, multi-day experience on foot through the villages between Mestia and Ushguli — much longer, more demanding, and not a substitute for each other.

Do I need a guide?+

We strongly recommend one, or at minimum solid offline navigation (see the apps below) and real trekking experience. Trail markers are inconsistent, weather changes fast, and there's no mobile signal on parts of the route.

When can you do this trek?+

June through September, matching the general Svaneti hiking season. Outside that window, high sections can still hold snow and villages along the way may not be set up for passing trekkers.
