Bezengyi Wall or Khaldei Wall: What's Correct?

🏔 Bezengyi Wall isn't a single peak but rather the highest section of the Greater Caucasus Ridge, stretching roughly 12 kilometers. It divides Upper Svaneti from Kabardino-Balkaria and appears as one massive ice and rock wall.

The massif includes Lyalver, Gestola, Katyntau, Jangitau, Mount Shota Rustaveli, and Shkhara—Georgia's highest peak.

Why does the wall have two names?

On the northern slopes of the massif flows one of the Caucasus's largest glaciers—the Bezengyi Glacier. Below it lies the valley of the same name. This is why Russian, Soviet, and international mountaineering tradition adopted the name Bezengyi Wall.

On the southern side you'll find the Khaldi and Shkhara glaciers, with the massif rising above the Khaldechali Valley and the area around the village of Khaldi. This is where the local name ხალდის კედელი—Khaldis Kedeli, meaning "Khaldi Wall," or Khaldei Wall, comes from.

Still, the division into "Russian" and "Georgian" names is fairly arbitrary. In Georgia's official encyclopedia, the site is called ბეზენგის კედელი—Bezengyi Wall. It also lists the alternative name Pitsrula and notes that in Georgia the massif is sometimes called Khaldei Wall.

So we're talking about one ridge here, not two different walls or two sections of a massif. It's a single range named after the glaciers and valleys on its different sides.
