Trekking Poles: Why They Matter in Svaneti's Mountains
Trekking poles are an important piece of gear for safe and comfortable mountain hiking in Svaneti. They reduce stress on your joints, help you maintain balance on slippery trails, and provide extra support. Proper length adjustment and walking technique make trekking more efficient and less tiring.
🥾 WHY TREKKING POLES MATTER
Many hikers think of poles as optional gear. You can certainly complete a route without them, but in the mountains they make the journey easier and safer.
Trekking poles:
• reduce strain on knees and ankles—especially on long descents; • help you keep your balance on rocks, scree, and wet grass; • provide extra support on steep climbs; • help you maintain a steady rhythm and tire less quickly; • make moving with a heavy backpack more stable; • let you test the depth of water, snow, or mud.
Poles are especially useful after rain, when Svaneti's trails become slippery, and on routes with significant elevation changes.
⚙️ How to Adjust the Length
On flat terrain, your elbow should bend at roughly a right angle.
• on uphill sections, shorten the poles slightly; • on downhill sections, lengthen them.
🚶 How to Walk Correctly
Plant the poles alternately with the opposite leg: right pole with left leg, left pole with right leg.
Trekking poles don't replace good boots and caution. But if your route is long, rocky, or has a serious descent, you'll be glad to have them.
