🚗 DRIVING TO SVANETI (Part 4)
TBILISI TO MESTIA: ROUTE BY SEGMENT
Distance via Zugdidi — approximately 460 km.
Drive time — roughly 8–9 hours without extended stops.
The road from Tbilisi to Mestia cuts through central and western Georgia. The route is shared until Kutaisi, then splits into two options: via Zugdidi or via Lentekhi and Zagaro Pass.
📍 Tbilisi → Gori → Rikoti → Kutaisi
Distance — approximately 220–230 km.
Drive time — roughly 3–3.5 hours.
Most of the route follows the East-West Highway (E60).
From Tbilisi, the road runs across flat sections and valleys, passing Mtskheta and Gori. Then comes the Likhi Range crossing via Rikoti, which divides eastern and western Georgia.
Since December 2025, traffic through Rikoti has been completely switched to a new four-lane highway. It stretches 52 km and includes 51 tunnels and 97 bridges.
The new road eliminates the need to tackle the old winding serpentine of Rikoti Pass. The highway cuts through the mountains via tunnels and bridges, significantly reducing travel time.
After Rikoti, the road descends into Imereti and continues toward Kutaisi.
The main highway has asphalt throughout. You'll find plenty of filling stations, cafes, shops, and rest stops along the way.
📍 After Kutaisi — two route options
- Via Zugdidi
Kutaisi → Zugdidi → Jvari → Khaishi → Mestia.
This is the main year-round route to Svaneti.
The road to Jvari is mostly flat. Beyond that, the terrain gets mountainous with frequent turns, climbs, and descents.
Most of the road is asphalt, though sections closer to Mestia have poor pavement.
📖 Zugdidi to Mestia: Road Conditions by Segment
- Via Lentekhi and Zagaro Pass
Kutaisi → Tskaltubo → Tsageri → Lentekhi → Tsana → Zagaro → Ushguli → Mestia.
A seasonal route crossing a pass at roughly 2,620 meters.
The road is shorter in distance but winding throughout. The main advantage is visiting Ushguli directly on the way to Mestia.
⚠️ The pass is usually open from around June to October, depending on snow and weather.
