🏔 August 8 — International Mountaineering Day

The date was chosen for good reason. On August 8, 1786, Jacques Balmat and physician Michel-Gabriel Paccard made the first successful ascent of Mont Blanc. This climb is considered one of the starting points in the history of modern mountaineering.

But for Svaneti, mountaineering means far more than sport.

Here, the mountains have always been part of life. Here, generations of people grew up learning the character of these peaks, reading the weather, finding their way through rock and ice, and treating the summits with profound respect.

Ushba, Shkara, Tetnuldi—today these names are known to mountaineers far beyond Georgia's borders. And Svaneti itself holds a special place in the history of Georgian mountaineering.

One of its greatest symbols is Mikhail Khergiani, born in Mestia in 1932. He became one of the most renowned Soviet climbers and alpinists of his era, tackling some of the most challenging routes in the Caucasus, Pamir, Tian Shan, and the Alps. For his extraordinary skill, he earned the nickname "Tiger of the Rocks." Today, his house-museum welcomes visitors in Mestia.

And perhaps it's here, more than anywhere, that you truly understand one simple truth:

the greatest victory in the mountains is not the summit.

The greatest victory is coming home.

We congratulate all mountaineers, mountain guides, rescue workers, and those for whom the climb upward has become a way of life.

May you always have reliable companions by your side, may the weather favor your route, and may the mountains always let you return home.

Happy International Mountaineering Day!
